CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUSTS FUNDED WITH REAL ESTATE: A WINNING SOLUTION FOR DONORS AND CHARITIES

Marcia Inger Navrátil

Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRTs) are an excellent vehicle for donors who want to support the charities they love, while also providing an income stream for themselves or their loved ones. For donors who own appreciated real property, using that property to fund a CRT can provide a host of tax advantages, while charities benefit from the irrevocable nature of the gift. This presentation will discuss the types of CRTs most suited to funding with real estate, the best types of property for donors to consider using to fund a CRT, and details that both donors and charities need to consider in determining how the trust is managed.

Marcia Inger Navrátil is the owner and principal consultant at Navrátil Philanthropic Solutions, where she works with non-profits, donors, and professional advisors to design creative fundraising strategies that match donor goals with institutional priorities. Marcia derives great satisfaction from crafting charitable gift plans that allow donors to achieve their philanthropic, personal, and financial goals. Marcia brings 20 years of experience to her current role, over a decade of that working with planned, principal, and complex gifts. She spent 13 years at The University of Texas System and The University of Texas at Austin, where she advised, trained, and collaborated with development colleagues and donors across the 14 University of Texas academic and health institutions. In addition to higher education, Marcia’s development background includes work with non-profits in the arts and social services. Marcia is the current President of the Austin chapter of NACGP, and has presented at the NACGP national conference, as well as at chapters across the country. She earned both her law degree and her bachelor’s degree in Art History from the University of Virginia.
